CHRISTIANS BEWARE OF YOUR LANGUAGE Article 8 - September, 2013
"But let your communication be Yea, yea; Nay, nay: for whatsoever is more than these cometh of evil" (Matthew 5:37).
What would you say if I told you that many words some Christians are saying are vulgar, blasphemous, pointless, in vain, and indeed not what Christians should be saying. Some of these words are spoken by Christians on a daily basis; many times not knowing they are wrong or where these words originated.
The Tongue
Let’ talk about the tongue. It seems we can control our bodies if we are in good health, however, it seems the tongue is uncontrollable even in good health. The tongue is one of the smallest parts of our body but is very powerful. “Death and life are in the power of the tongue: and they that love it shall eat the fruit thereof” (Proverbs 18:21). “But the tongue can no man tame; it is an
unruly evil, full of deadly poison” (James 3:8).
Controlling the Tongue
There is an avenue to control the tongue and this is through our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Within and by ourselves it would be impossible to stop our tongues from saying things we should not say. “I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me” (Philippians 4:13). So, now we know there is hope to control our language. God made a way and expects us to live a righteous life. “If any man among you seem to be religious
and bridleth not his tongue, but deceiveth his own heart, this man’s religion is vain" (James 1:26). Please know that one day we will stand before God and have to give an account for every word we speak. “But I say unto you, That every idle word that men shall speak, they shall give
account thereof in the day of judgment” (Matthew 12:36).
God's Name in Vein
“Thou shalt not take the name of the Lord thy God in vain; for the Lord will not hold him guiltless that taketh His name in vain” (Exodus 20:7). This is a very serious scripture and commandment. So beware!
The word "vain" in Strong’s Greek #3155 COGNATEI means: Your words are used to no purpose and in an unreal way, aimlessly or pointless.
Your words are vain, empty, as nothing. If you are using God’s name with no purpose, you could fit into the following categories: swearer, disrespectful, blasphemous, irreverent, wicked, sacrilegious, vulgar, and etc. By using His name in vein, you may be on your way to a place you do not
want to be and that is hell. We all want to make it to heaven. When we use His name, it should only be to glorify God with the respect and true praise He deserves. Anything less is not acceptable to God. “Out of the same mouth proceedeth blessing and cursing. My brethren, these things ought not so to be. Doth a fountain send forth at the same place sweet water and bitter” (James 3:10-11).
Swearing
When my mom went to court once a very long time ago, the judge told her to swear and she simply told him that her word would have to do because
she did not believe in swearing. The judge said her word was good enough. “But I say unto you, swear not at all; neither by heaven; for it is God’s throne; nor by the earth; for it is his footstool; neither by Jerusalem; for it is the city of the great King. Neither shalt thou swear by thy head, because thou canst not make one hair white or black. But let your communication be yea, yea; nay nay for whatsoever is more than these cometh of evil”
(Matthew 5:34-37). Now, I don’t know how much clearer these scriptures can be, however, Many Christians do not abide by these scriptures.
Remember we live in this world but we are not of this world. We must stand on what the Word of God says.
Vulgar Language
Why do some Christians tell nasty jokes and have evil communication that comes from their hearts, and, therefore, proceeds from their mouths.
It is forbidden by God. I will let the scriptures speak for itself. “Let no corrupt communication proceed out of your mouth, but that which is good to the use of edifying, that it may minister grace unto the hearers” (Ephesians 4:29). “But now ye also put off all of these; anger, wrath, malice, blasphemy, filthy communication out of your mouth” (Colossians 3:8). “Let no rotten word come out of your mouth, but if something is good for the upbuilding of a need in order that it might give grace to those who hear” (Ephesians 4:29). How are you using your tongue? You can use it for the glory of God or for the glory of the devil. “Death and life are in the power of the tongue; and they that love it shall eat the fruit there” (Proverbs 18:21).
Conviction from Bad Language
If you are not convicted when bad language comes from your mouth, there is a problem. Maybe there is a need for spiritual cleansing.
When your heart is clean, the words that proceed from your mouth, will be clean. “That ye put off concerning the former conversation the old man, which is corrupt according to the deceitful lusts; And be renewed in the spirit of your mind; And that ye put on the new man, which after God is created in righteousness and true holiness” (Ephesians 4:22-24). “What? Know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you,
which ye have of God, and ye or not your own” (1Corinthians 6:19)?
I could go on and on and on with scriptures which speak against using bad language, however, many of you know them better than I. If you are telling bad jokes, using bad language, and using euphemisms which are unbecoming to Christians, please STOP because remember what the scriptures say? Death and life are in the power of the tongue.
Time is Short
Jesus is coming soon. We had better shape up or we may just miss the mark. When the following takes, place, it’s already too late.
“He that is unjust, let him be unjust still: and he which is filthy, let him be filthy still: and he that is righteous, let him be righteous still: and he that is holy, let him be holy still. And behold, I come quickly; and my reward is with me, to give every man according as his work shall be”
(Revelation 22:12).
What are Euphemisms?
They are words substituted in a mild, indirect, or vague term for another word. Some are used in a good way such as the following:
between jobs - unemployed; passed away - dead; correctional facility - jail, let someone go - fired; put to sleep - euthanize;
on the streets - homeless.
However curse words are also used in a mild, indirect, or vague term for another word. Please know, Christians, if you are using some of these words in your every-day-walk for the Lord, you may want to rethink your language. I will not be typing some of the harsher ones, but you will get the
point. It is my hope that this article will help us all. Please read the list below:
hell/d/god
blame, blazes confound, dang, darn, doggone, gosh, heck, sam hill
Jesus/Christ/God - These words are either referring to Jesus, Christ or God
omg, my word, cripes, Christ, jiminy cricket, judas priest, judas, golly, golly gee, gee whiz, gosh, gosh almighty, good grief, good god, geez, gee, jeepers, Jesus Christ, Jesus, by God, by Jesus, by George, good grief, good gosh, good God, gosh, good gracious, goodness me, golly, my goodness

diddly poo, poppy cock, oh shoot, shoot cr-p
These euphemisms are by far all of the words some Christians are using. However, praise the Lord, all Christians do not use these words because they are sanctified. If you are trying to live a holy life, please refrain from using these words. The wages of sin death. We must be careful because we want to make it to heaven.
I think it might be good to note that my next subject to post is on Sanctification written by Sister Doris Leist from The Church of God in Vicksburg, MS.
If we are bogged down with an unruly tongue we may need to have good old time sanctification. God Bless My Readers.
